Donald Anderson Madison, Wisconsin Portfolio letterpress printing on mouldmade paper, case binding 12 x 19 sheets; 12 3/4 x 20 1/4 box closed; 12 3/4 x 26 1/4 box open edition of 50 © 2005 $600 “I began listening to jazz in high school and I began drawing jazz musicians at the University of Iowa. There were several players in the house I lived in and I attended many jam sessions and played rotten trombone on a couple ofpaid jobs. I tried, off and on, to capture the essence of jazz musicians at work and failed over and over. There was only one way to capture these essences of sound and action - the same way the souds were created - free and fast. Swish, lay it on. I came off a three year stint on a design text feeling like I had just got out of jail. Freed in the summer of 1960, I bought 100 blotters 24 by 38 inches and attacked these with brush and ink in a series of duels that lasted two years. I thought I won a few of these skirmishes. Hence this portfolio.” Donald Anderson, now deceased, taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Phil Hamilton collaborated with him on the portfolio, which was printed on Velin Arches.
